What happens during a massage session?
At your first massage therapy session, the therapist will ask you about any symptoms you may have (such as neck pain) and will also ask questions about your medical history. The therapist may also initiate a discussion about what you expect to achieve from the massage session.
The therapist leaves the room while you undress. You only need to undress to the point you feel comfortable, a therapist can work around undergarments. Lay down on a massage table and cover yourself with a sheet. This sheet will remain in place during the entire session, and only moved to expose areas being worked on. Oil or lotion is often used to reduce friction between the therapist’s hands and your skin. Please let your therapist know if you have any allergies.
The room is kept warm and free of distractions. Often music will be playing softly in the background. Your therapist will check in often to ask whether you are comfortable and if too much or too little pressure is being applied. It is important to maintain steady breathing throughout the session.
A massage session can last from 15-90 minutes and may include a schedule of follow-up visits, depending on the severity of your situation .Understand that the time spent with the massage therapist is your time. Do not be afraid to request the room be a different temperature, different music or any other thing to make your massage special. If you have any questions just ask your massage therapist.
